Decalcification of teeth is the loss of minerals from tooth enamel, which weakens the enamel and makes it more prone to damage. 🦷
What it looks like:
•Chalky white spots on the teeth (early sign)
•Yellow or brown discoloration if it worsens
•Rough or dull enamel surface
•Can eventually turn into cavities if untreated
Common causes:
•Plaque buildup (bacteria produce acid)
•Poor or inconsistent brushing/flossing
•Braces or aligners (harder to clean around brackets)
•Frequent sugary or acidic foods/drinks
•Dry mouth or reduced saliva flow
Why it matters:
•Decalcification is IRREVERSIBLE enamel damage once it progresses, but early stages can be remineralized and improved.
Prevention:
•Brush 2x daily with fluoride toothpaste
•Floss daily (or use a water flosser)
•Use fluoride mouth rinse
•Professional fluoride treatments
•Limit sugary/acidic snacks and drinks
•Maintain regular dental cleanings
•Extra care around braces (interdental brushes)
