The symbol of the cross means a lot of things to a lot of people. For some it holds the weight of trauma, and for some it has been used as a justification for crusades of control in the name of power or religion. For some it is a symbol that has always just been there as a nice decoration. But for some, it means what it was always meant to represent in all of its irony: healing, forgiveness, and the greatest love. It breaks my heart this Easter to see the name of Jesus still being dragged through the mud and still being used to justify evil. Earthly human attempts at purification always reveal true motives in the end.
I am reminded of the words of Jesus with his innocent loving eyes saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Easter makes me emotional because I have tasted and seen the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. I have been able to do this because innocence took the fall for me. I know the name of Jesus and what His mercy has done for me, in spite of myself. I know that the message of Jesus is never one of death or destruction, but one that ends with hope and a hand that extends to all in love and peace. I choose to follow the way of Jesus, and that of no other king. He has already conquered death, and he needs no earthly system to fight the battle that He has already won over sin. He alone is where my hope rests. This cross I pass on my commute regularly reminds me that He is on the throne, and I choose to trust His heart this Easter.
