Despite the current focus on AI and automation, we believe people are still the key to successful cold chain operations. Here’s why…
According to Grand View Research, the global cold chain market is set to achieve a CAGR of over 18% by 2030. If recent trends are an indicator, that’s going to be dominated by temperature-sensitive storage and transportation.
The trends driving this include rapidly increasing consumer demand for packaged foods, efforts to minimize food waste and the sensitivity of pharmaceutical supply chains.
Technology solutions will undoubtedly play a huge role, but they can be expensive, slow to implement successfully and force other major operational changes.’
What this means is that the need for experienced cold chain workers is not going to disappear overnight - probably never.
How do you see the balance between cold chain staffing and automation playing out over the next three to five years?

What skills will supply chain workers need in the rapidly accelerating world of AI?
For roles that don’t call for college degrees, here’s the list of skills the U.S. Government Accountability Office is predicting will be most in demand:
- Active listening
- Social perceptiveness
- Service orientation
- Speaking
- Monitoring
- Critical thinking
- Coordination
- Judgment and decision making
Dr Yossi Sheffi of MIT’s Center for Transportation and Logistics has written extensively on this in his new book, “The Magic Conveyor Belt: Supply Chains, A.I., and the Future of Work.”
Here’s a quick excerpt that sums up the main challenge:
“One distressing challenge associated with technological change is that although a new technology may certainly bring new jobs, those new jobs typically require new or different skills that displaced workers don’t always have. In a world with increasing automation and shifting technologies, many workers will need new or upgraded skills in order to retain, regain, or improve their employment.”
How well prepared are your logistics workers for the changes that AI will inevitably bring to the way they do their jobs?

With over 130 million Americans relying on prescription drugs every day, many of which are temperature-sensitive or require refrigeration, the logistics stakes are incredibly high.
It's not just about the large-scale vaccine distribution that was needed during the height of the pandemic, but essential everyday medications.
You won't find the necessary skill set in your typical warehouse staff. And drivers managing these critical shipments must maintain product integrity from start to finish.
Beyond the capacity to operate in chilly conditions, an unwavering focus on detail and a genuine commitment to regulatory standards are essential. What's needed are team members who prioritize these aspects at the core of their responsibilities.
If you're curious about how ColdStaff can be your ally in sourcing such dedicated personnel, let's connect.
