Proprioception is the ability to sense how your body moves in it’s environment; it senses your body’s position and how it moves in the space it’s in. It works with constant feedback loops through sensory fibers located in your muscles, tendons and joints to help with balance, coordination and stability (motor fibers). When you have an instability of musculature caused from poor posture/form, repetitive movements or positions, it trains the brain to hold the musculature in such a position that it can cause subluxations of the joint positions. That’s not to say the joint itself is always malpositioned but the nerves sense that there is a imbalance which can hinder your balance and smooth coordinated movements. When the sense of velocity, force, or direction is changed in the body, there is a greater propensity for injury, falls, and other accidents. Proprioceptive training along with Chiropractic is paramount to maintaining the stability and integrity of the musculoskeletal system for lasting results and graceful aging. Give us a call to see how we can improve your balance and coordination.

Musculoskeletal pain is almost non-existent in indigenous cultures for many reasons. Societal working norms, inflammatory diets, and environmental stressors are just a few examples that are prevalent in our modern day society. Another major reason for first world joint and muscular pain is the fact that we are always wearing shoes. Our structure and so our stability begin in our feet and by wearing footwear constantly, you may as well be putting casts on your feet because shoes inhibit all of the major intrinsic musculature in your feet that help keep our posture strong and balanced. Not only do we wear footwear but have different shoes for different occasions which is constantly offsetting the way we walk and therefore move. These kinetic changes make our bodies very unstable. These movements cause compensatory muscular changes of our knees, hips, pelvis and back which ultimately cause instability and pain. Start kicking those shoes off when you can! Walking with bare feet will help to reengage the important neuromuscular circuits in your feet to help prevent long lasting issues. Give us a call for an appointment to see how we can strengthen your feet, reengage your neurology, and balance your body in order to maintain long lasting stability.
We're so happy to be helping so many patients with their chronic pain! Call us today to set up an appointment to see how we can help you too!
