UNMC SAPA

Last Saturday we hosted our first Deaf Centric Hospital event!
This event included role-playing exercises, where UNMC students became "patients" who seek medical information from "doctors" who are local members of the deaf community. The goal for this learning event is for students to think of solutions and resources to reduce healthcare inequities within the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Thank you to all who participated and made the event such a success. We can’t wait to continue this event for years to come😁

Join us for our next DCAL workshop this Saturday from 10-noon!
During this workshop, we will learn about services such as Interpreters, Deaf Interpreters, and CART captioning. We will also discuss legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and specific Nebraska health care laws that apply to caring for individuals in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community and others of all abilities. Additionally, a guest who is a Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA) will share their personal experiences. Finally, we will spend time reviewing American Sign Language as a large group and then practicing in smaller breakout rooms. This will be entirely virtual without an in-person component. Five random student attendees from UNMC will receive a $15 Grubhub gift card following the workshop!
