Though it may seem crazy to already be considering fall vegetable gardening, most fall crops are actually planted in July!

Beginning now (if gardeners have space), you can start getting broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and potatoes in the ground. Toward the end of the month, carrots, beets, collards, daikon radishes, and rutabagas can follow.

Keep in mind that if you intend to incorporate a winter cover crop this coming off-season, it needs to be planted by early September, so quick-developing fall vegetable varieties are important so they are out of the way in time.

Also remember that cool-season crops are more sensitive when planted this time of year than in the spring. Thick straw mulch and consistent soil moisture will be key to keeping conditions stable for proper development.
