15 Habits Elite Pool Players Have That Good Players Don’t
A lot of people think the difference between a good player and an elite player is talent.
It’s usually not.
The biggest difference is the habits they repeat every single day.
Here are some of the biggest ones.
1. They never stop working on fundamentals.
Elite players don’t think they’re “above” practicing stop shots, straight-ins, or their stroke. They know everything is built on the basics.
2. They practice with a purpose.
Good players hit balls.
Elite players train specific skills, measure their progress, and leave practice knowing exactly what they improved.
3. They embrace their weaknesses.
Most players practice what they’re already good at.
Elite players spend the most time on the shots that make them uncomfortable.
4. They have a consistent pre-shot routine.
Every important shot looks the same.
The routine becomes automatic, especially under pressure.
5. They control their emotions.
They get frustrated like everyone else.
The difference is they recover quickly and don’t let one mistake turn into three.
6. They play percentages instead of their ego.
They don’t shoot low-percentage shots just to prove they can.
Winning is more important than showing off.
7. They think several shots ahead.
They’re constantly planning cue ball routes, break-out opportunities, and problem balls instead of reacting one shot at a time.
8. They stay patient.
They don’t force run-outs that aren’t there
They wait for the right opportunity.
9. They own their mistakes.
They don’t blame the table, the rolls, the equipment, or luck
They ask, “What could I have done better?”
That’s how they improve.
10. They stay in the present.
They aren’t thinking about the money, the score, or the trophy.
Their attention stays on the shot in front of them.
11. They trust their stroke.
When it’s time to pull the trigger, they commit.
No steering.
No decelerating.
No second-guessing.
12. They learn from every match.
Win or lose, they leave with notes, mental or written, about what they need to improve.
Every match becomes a lesson.
13. They respect every opponent.
They don’t underestimate weaker players or get intimidated by stronger ones.
They play the table, not the name.
14. They train their mind as much as their mechanics.
Confidence.
Focus.
Discipline.
Emotional control.
They understand these skills can be developed just like a stroke.
15. They stay hungry.
No matter how well they play, they believe there’s another level to reach.
That’s why they keep getting better while everyone else stays the same.
The truth is, elite players don’t have better habits because they’re elite.
They’re elite because they built better habits.
Talent might get you noticed.
Habits determine how far you go.
