WHY TAKE LESSONS TO LEARN HOW TO RIDE A HORSE?
November 26, 2024
Riding a horse is similar to driving a car.
You would not give the keys to your car to anyone who has never driven before and send them out for a drive on their own in traffic.
Same for horses.
Additionally, horses have minds of their own unlike cars.
They are prey animals who have a highly developed sense of fright and flight.
Even the most calm horse can be startled and negatively react.
Horses have varying personalities and skill sets just like people.
They can be gentle caretakers, exceptional teachers, fantastic athletes
Horses can also be criminals, sociopaths, or have any mental illness or disability.
The first thing a person must do when learning to be around horses is how to interact with them, how to safely move around them and what to do if the animal becomes agitated.
People must learn what are good practices and what can get you in trouble.
One needs to always think about what can go wrong and attempt to anticipate an escape route for themselves and the horse.
People should learn how to catch, lead, groom, tack up, untack, and groom after riding.
Its just like knowing the basics of taking care of your car.
And this is the first opportunity to interact with the horse and learn about it's personality.
Primary riding instruction will be on how to apply the aids.
Aids are signals a horse to do something.
Aids are sometimes called ques.
The most important skill a beginning rider learns is how to balance on a standing horse and as it moves around.
First lessons should always be done on a quiet horse in a very controlled environment, such as a round pen or on a longe line.
An educated and experienced instructor is the best option for a safe introduction to riding.
All of this said, it takes time and repetition to learn to ride.
No one can have a lesson or two and be well prepared for unexpected occurrences just as one or two car driving lessons does not make one safe to be on a highway.

HORSEMANSHIP THEORIES
March 2, 2025|PHILOSOPHY OF HORSEMANSHIP
Horsemanship theories are ideas which have been proven correct over thousands of years of handling and riding horses.
There are dozens of books which explain horse behavior and how to interact with equines.
There are many hundreds of books which explain how to train and ride horses.
If a person reads all of them, she or he will find much of their content is the same.
One can say there are universal theories of horsemanship which most people recognize as fundamentally critical for successful results when working with horses.
Horsemanship theories are very established since horses and humans have been working together for thousands of years.
New, improved, and miracle theories should be met with a high degree of skepticism.
People who wish to learn how to work with, train, compete, or just have fun with horses are best served by learning horsemanship theories.
This means putting effort in the study of horsemanship:
Start out with a good instructor.
Read books and articles.
Watch videos.
Watch and participate in clinics.
Watch expert riders schooling at home and warming up at competitions
Watch competitions live and videos.
Keep a written record of what is learned every time so one can compare notes and remember something that may become lost with time.
Theories make a terrific foundation and solid framework to build equestrian knowledge.
They enable a person to practice proven methods.
You won't waste time on methods that will fail.
With practice you will be able to own proven methods and be capable of practicing excellence in horsemanship.
Every proven theory can have exceptions, especially when a horse has different behaviors from other horses.
Great horse people seek to unlock why a horse may act out of the ordinary.
The uniquely different horse may require a trainer to throw known theories out the window and experiment to discover what may work.
