Let's bust an old tree trimming myth: "You should apply paint or sealer to protect the trimmed area."

In the past, people thought painting over tree wounds would help the tree heal faster and keep out bugs and disease. Sounds logical, right? But research has shown that those “tree wound dressings” don’t really help—and can actually hurt your tree. A lot of the stuff you can still buy is petroleum-based (yep, like what you’d use to seal your gutters or the underside of your lawnmower deck 👀). Not exactly what you want soaking into living tissue.

The truth? Trees don’t heal like people do—they seal. They naturally compartmentalize wounds to stop decay from spreading. So skip the paint. A clean, proper pruning "Collar" cut is all your tree needs to do its thing.
