Do you REALLY need Workers’ Comp if you have no employees?
If you're licensed under certain California contractor classifications, the answer may be yes.
California currently requires Workers’ Comp coverage for contractors holding the following license classifications, even with no employees:
• C-8 Concrete
• C-20 HVAC
• C-22 Asbestos Abatement
• D-49 Tree Service
Solo operators can often get affordable "ghost" policies with $0 payroll.

Here are 5 quick signs your coverage is outdated:
(1) You’ve hired employees,
(2) Added vehicles/equipment,
(3) Taken on bigger projects,
(4) Moved or expanded locations, or
(5) Haven’t reviewed it in 12+ months.
A quick conversation with a local broker can uncover gaps and often save money through better bundling or discounts without cutting protection.

Using your personal truck for job sites in California?
Your personal auto policy probably won’t cover it; most exclude business use entirely. If you get into an accident while hauling tools, visiting clients, or on a job, expect a denial that leaves you personally liable for damages and injuries.
Switch to Commercial Auto for proper protection, and add Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) coverage if employees or subs use their own vehicles for your business. This is one of the most common gaps we fix for SoCal contractors.
