1/30/26- National Shutdown
“Hate has no home here.”
A statewide economic blackout that began as a protest against intensified ICE violence in Minneapolis has grown into a broader national movement. Organizers, community groups, unions, and local leaders are calling for people to pause work, school, and consumer spending on January 30 in solidarity with immigrant communities and in response to recent enforcement actions.
Supporters say the goal is to demonstrate the collective economic and social impact of immigrant communities and to call for accountability, safety, and dignity for all. Whether participating directly or staying informed, organizers are encouraging dialogue and engagement.

“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
The normalization of hate against communities of color and our immigrant neighbors in cities such as Minneapolis is unacceptable. Trust between communities and those that serve and protect them is foundational to democracy. No one should live in fear solely because of their race, country of birth, or other protected characteristic. Since its founding 30 years ago, NIOT has worked to close the gaps of understanding to counteract bias and hate in all forms, including community policing standards developed in conjunction with law enforcement and underserved communities. As Dr. King said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”
