Some highlights from our third Roots and Riches course with the Young Women of Color group!

We talked about the importance of building strong savings and credit habits and building them early.

1. Always pay yourself first!
2. Set up your auto deposit for both your checking and savings 🏦
3. Start building credit early, but keep credit balances low
4. Always pay your credit card statements on time (even the minimum payments)
5. Monitor your accounts regularly

A good credit score is between 670-820.

What are the money practices that have helped you build a good credit history?

✨ August 28th: A Day That Changed Black History Forever ✨

📍 1955: The brutal murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till shocked the world. Rosa Parks later said she thought of Emmett when she refused to give up her bus seat—helping ignite the Civil Rights Movement.

📍 1963: More than 250,000 gathered for the March on Washington, where Dr. King shared his “I Have a Dream” vision for justice.

📍 2005: Hurricane Katrina struck the heart of New Orleans. We remember the lives lost, the resilience of survivors, and the deep inequities the storm laid bare.

📍 2008: Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination, becoming the first Black man to lead a major U.S. party ticket.

📍 2016: Civil rights activist, Colin Kaepernick first kneeled during the national anthem, beginning a protest against police brutality that continues to echo worldwide.

Last month, we walked through history in Chicago—Hyde Park, a historically Black neighborhood that has shaped movements, culture, and power. From the home of Emmett Till’s family, to the resting place of giants like Ida B. Wells and Jesse Owens, to the DuSable Museum keeping our stories alive.
Hyde Park has long been home to visionaries—the Obamas, Muhammad Ali, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Lorraine Hansberry, Gwendolyn Brooks—and so many more who carried our struggle and brilliance forward.

1. Juneteenth Financial Literacy Events and Workshops
The West Oakland Youth Center is hosting a Juneteenth event teaching families about budgeting, saving, and investing. These workshops empower attendees with practical money skills and encourage open family conversations about financial health. Follow

2. Oakland Black Business Fund (OBBF)
OBBF is a community-led initiative that partners with Bay Area corporations and financial institutions to provide grants, capital, and technical assistance to Black-owned businesses. Since 2020, OBBF has raised over $500,000 and supported more than 95 Black businesses, with a goal of reaching 250. Their model addresses systemic bias in traditional lending and helps Black entrepreneurs grow, create jobs, and build wealth in Oakland. Follow

3. East Oakland Collective’s Economic Empowerment Programs
The East Oakland Collective increases Black residents’ participation in lending circles and promotes collective economic opportunities, such as cooperative home and business ownership. These initiatives are designed to build community wealth and foster financial literacy and unity among Black residents. Follow

4. Small Business Incubators and Technical Assistance
Programs like the Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation and the People of Color Small Business Network offer business incubator training, one-on-one coaching, and seed capital to Black and Brown entrepreneurs in Oakland. These efforts have led to the creation of new businesses, jobs, and increased local investment, directly contributing to closing the wealth gap. Follow
