Jan David Winitz has spent most of his life thinking about antique Persian rugs. A close family member, one of the few women involved in the collecting niche in the mid-20th century, originally spurred his interest and passion. “While collecting baseball cards and playing sports as a child,” he remembers, “I was also looking at rugs with her, asking questions and being drawn in by their majesty and beauty.”

More than 50 years later, he is the world’s foremost dealer in art-level rugs woven during the “Second Golden Age of Persian of Weaving,” circa 1800 to circa 1910…

The Collecting Passion

In looking at the three styles of collectors, one can, of course, see many overlapping areas.

The Aesthete buys works of art to create a stunning, individual home. He or she chooses only those pieces that promise to work in copacetic harmony with other elements residing within the intended space.

The Connoisseur’s desire is to collect the most covetable offerings of a given genre but to create an interior design that will accommodate the widest possible selection of art objects

Pure Collectors are typically more prolific in the time they spend with the art form they focus on and in their acquisition than either the Aesthete or the Connoisseur. Indeed, some build massive, world-class collections that, while seldom out of mind, are often held safely, mostly out of sight.

Where does one start and what should be considered as the process begins?

Some new buyers are uncertain about the merits of choosing authentic antique rugs over the late 20th-century Persian rugs and modern reproductions that are prevalent in today's market. Some clients put enormous attention into their homes' craftsmanship and detail work, but give little thought to the quality of what goes on their floors. They may think that a contemporary reproduction is a safer choice, its condition unquestionable, its colors, design, and even its size, available on demand. But the difference between an innovative antique creation and a new floor covering that, while hand-knotted, has a design and limited color spectrum that is reproduced in different sizes is infinitely greater than that of an original work of art and the poster that depicts it.

Just as there are no shortcuts when it comes to aging wine, there are none here. The antique carpets still available to us today come from a millennia-long tradition of skills and intellectual property that exposes contemporary rugs as flat and lifeless by comparison.
