🎉 Honoring Juneteenth: Joy as resistance, justice as a calling
On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were finally told they were free. That moment became Juneteenth, a day of delayed liberation that reminds us how justice in America has never come easily, or on time.
At Public Rights Project, we honor Juneteenth not just by looking back, but by acting now. We see the echoes of that history in today’s fights — against federal intimidation, unlawful immigration raids, and attacks on civil rights. And we remain committed to standing with local governments and communities resisting these abuses of power.
We’re reminded that progress doesn’t require a majority — but it does require a committed few. As political scientist Erica Chenoweth’s research shows, it takes just 3.5% of a population to spark meaningful change.
So today, we rest. We reflect. And we recommit. Whether through lawsuits, mutual aid, or protest — freedom is a shared effort. And as Black poet Toi Dericotte reminds us, “joy is an act of resistance.”
Wishing you peace, power, and purpose this Juneteenth.
