The story coming out of The Woodlands about the woman who rescued a man from a burning Tesla is wild and heroic.

What many people don’t realize is that electric vehicle (EV) fires are a whole different situation than gas-powered cars. The issue isn’t how often they catch fire; it’s what happens when they do.

EVs use lithium-ion batteries, and when those are damaged, they can go into something called thermal runaway. It’s a chain reaction where the battery cells overheat and ignite, one after the other. The heat can exceed 1,000°F, and reignition can happen hours or even days later.

That’s why firefighters had to use thousands of gallons of water, a thermal fire blanket, and hours of cooling just to stabilize the car.

This isn’t about fear, it’s about awareness. EVs are here to stay, and stories like this are a reminder that emergency response, training, and everyday drivers need to be informed too.
