Nebraska Roots, Chicago Impact: Lifelong Friends Unite to Support Community Outreach with Tractor and Soil Renewal Efforts

A Nebraska friendship is transforming a Chicago neighborhood. Garnet Walters of Petra Insurance Group and HOWffers Association, together with lifelong friend Ron Regier of Regier Equipment, and colleague Richard Blackmore of TRI Management LLC, are joining forces to support Ebenezer Community Outreach (ECO), a nonprofit led by Pastor Emeritus Leon Miller of Mt. Ebenezer Baptist Church. ECO has established an urban agriculture initiative to provide healthy food options through community gardens, promote nutrition and educate inner city youth on careers in agriculture.

Regier and his extended family donated a Massey Ferguson compact loader tractor to expand ECO’s community gardens and aid in snow removal, while TRI Management will apply its bioremediation products to restore the soil, ensuring it is safe for growing food.

“At a time when so much of our public life feels divided, this is neighbors coming together from across the country with a unified mission,” said Walters. “There’s no Red State, no Blue State—just God’s State, where we can serve one another and help communities flourish.”

Stewarding the Kingdom's Resources: A Call to Charitable Giving and Endowment Building

"A society grows great when old men plant trees under whose shade they know they shall never sit."

In the journey of faith and service, one of the paramount responsibilities bestowed upon us as stewards is the careful management of the resources entrusted to us by the Kingdom. This stewardship encompasses not only the spiritual guidance we provide but also the tangible assets we manage to further the mission of our communities and advance the work of God on Earth. Among these resources, none is more vital than charitable giving and endowment building.

Charitable giving lies at the heart of our Christian ethos. It is a profound expression of love, compassion, and solidarity with our fellow human beings. As church leaders, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to foster a culture of generosity within our congregations and communities. By teaching and exemplifying the principles of sacrificial giving, we can inspire our members to embrace the joy and fulfillment that comes from sharing their blessings with those in need.

However, charitable giving is not merely an act of spontaneous generosity; it is a strategic investment in the Kingdom's work. It requires thoughtful planning and stewardship to ensure that resources are allocated effectively to maximize their impact. This is where endowment building comes into play, facilitated by our HOWffers Association (www.howffers.com) partners at Giverise.

Endowments serve as a sustainable source of funding for the long-term sustainability and growth of our ministries. Through HOWffers, you can access the easy setup and professional institutional management offered through Giverise that will enable you to ensure your church’s future. By establishing endowments, we create a legacy of support that will endure for generations, enabling us to carry out our mission with greater resilience and effectiveness. Endowments provide stability in times of uncertainty and enable us to pursue ambitious initiatives that would otherwise be beyond our reach.

Building an endowment requires vision, commitment, and a willingness to invest in the future of our faith communities. It requires us to engage with our members, educate them about the importance of planned giving, and invite them to participate in securing the financial health of our churches for years to come. Moreover, it necessitates prudent financial management and transparency to ensure that funds are managed responsibly and in accordance with the values and priorities of our communities.

As we embark on the journey of stewarding the Kingdom's resources, let us do so with faith, diligence, and humility. Let us cultivate a culture of generosity that transcends individual interests and fosters a sense of collective responsibility for the wellbeing of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us invest not only in bricks and mortar but also in the hearts and souls of those we serve.

In conclusion, let us heed the call to stewardship with conviction and purpose, knowing that the resources entrusted to us are not ours to hoard but ours to share for the greater glory of God and the advancement of His Kingdom on Earth.

What an inspirational evening we had at the 60th (SIXTY!) pastoral anniversary celebration for “Papa” Reed, an Oklahoma institution. The people we met and stories we heard drove home the understanding of how much impact one compassionate person can have.

So glad to have Petra represented by Garnie, me Greg Mathews and Tahj Scott.
