TRI-TECH IS BECOMING AI-POWERED
Artificial Intelligence will be most helpful to me regarding Lead-Based Paint testing of multi-family property, where large amounts of data are generated to be crunched and analyzed. For example, I currently am working on two abandoned apartment buildings (48 and 56 units) that I will be testing for Lead Risk Assessment under the multi-family "worst-case scenario" protocol (the terms of the deal required it before rehab). I used the online AI tool Julius to analyze all the unit data in Excel (about 2200 XRF shots each ) to tell me the worst units in terms of the number of lead painted components and the units with the highest concentrations of lead.

WHEN DID THEY STOP PUTTING LEAD IN PAINT?
The simplest answer to the question is that the amount of lead allowable in paint was lowered by federal law to 1% in 1971, 0.5 % in 1972 and then to 0.06% in 1977. It was further reduced to 0.009% (90 ppm) in 2009.
However, in reality, manufacturers voluntarily reduced the amount of lead in paint well before 1978. In addition, since lead was a premium ingredient that added to the cost of the paint, the levels of lead in some old formulations of paint often had very little or no lead.
Lead was often added for purposes of pigmenting the paint or giving it additional strength or wear resistance or to improve drying. "

WEAR THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD
One of the lead hazards that gets scant to no attention is the generation of lead friction dust from metal hanger wearing on wooden clothes rods. You can expect trace amounts of invisible friction dust falling on clothes and possessions below in the closets every time the hanger scratches the paint. The readings in the heavily worn areas are often up to half that on the unworn ends, indicating how much lead has already been released. In this particular house, the rod in the parent's bedroom was LBP and the levels were 0.3-0.6 in the other closets. I'll typically make recommendations for a hazard control response whenever I find a worn clothes rod over 0.2 mg/cm2.
