When Queen performed Under Pressure on Saturday Night Live in September 1982, it became much more than a television appearance.

The performance marked Queen’s only time on SNL and, unknowingly, Freddie Mercury’s final live performance in the United States. With David Bowie absent, Roger Taylor stepped in to handle Bowie’s vocal sections, giving the song a rawer and more stripped-back feel than the original recording.

Coming at the end of an exhausting tour and shortly after the release of Hot Space, the performance captures Queen during a unique moment in their career—still evolving their sound while continuing to showcase the chemistry and musicianship that made them legendary.
