🚨Boundaries 🛑✋🏾Especially during the holiday season I think it’s important for us to revisit what healthy boundaries are & how to deal with situations when other try to cross our boundaries. As a Licensed Therapist in private practice boundary violations are one of the primary reasons why clients come to see me. On a more personal level, as a survivor of complex childhood trauma I use to struggle with healthy boundaries because 1.)Growing up this information was never taught to me or modeled for me 2.)My boundaries had been crossed so many times throughout my life that I really didn’t know where I ended & others began. As a result I would often say “Yes” to requests from others because I didn’t want to upset them or lose them in my life even when I really needed to say “No” to them. I would ignore my internal safety body cues to try & please others. Doing these things caused so much harm to me. One interesting thing that I’ve often found about boundaries is that others, especially those with a lack of healthy boundaries themselves, don’t really seem to care much when you are hurt by their boundary violating actions. Thankfully with supportive therapy, having difficult conversations with others when needed, & years of being intentional about maintaining healthy boundaries even when it was hard, I’ve gotten better. I’ve also helped lots of clients do the same. Here are some of my favorite quotes, tips, & handouts about healthy boundaries.
