What Iran Taught Me About Resilience, Negotiation, and Power
There are moments in a career that stay with you—not because of what was said, but because of what I understood. In 1979, before the hostage crisis, I conducted business on what was then Pahlavi Street in Tehran. I sat across from decision-makers in formal settings where protocol, hierarchy, and culture shaped every interaction. In one meeting, I made a deliberate choice—to walk around a long conference table to engage directly. It was a small but risky act, but in that environment, it mattered.
What I learned in Iran was not just about business. It was about resilience as a strategy—how nations, institutions, and individuals operate under pressure, adapt to constraints, and endure beyond expectations.
That lesson was reinforced by history. Iran’s ability to withstand prolonged conflict and isolation is not accidental—it reflects a deeper cultural and strategic orientation toward endurance.
Today, as we navigate global uncertainty, fractured markets, and shifting power dynamics, those lessons are more relevant than ever.
This section also offers a preview of a chapter from my forthcoming book on cultural intelligence and global enterprise.
To my granddaughter, Candace Nicholas-Lippman, strength and fortitude comes in a multitude of ways. It is very emotional and draining. However it is most fulfilling when you achieve. Goals vary along with a changing time frame.
Kudos to your willingness to address and overcome the obstacles that you have faced. Your strenth in God provides the fuel for your journey!
Congratulations on the launch of your 5th one-women show in Las Angeles this weekend. 🍾
