Let’s talk about the real question: does hormone therapy increase the overall risk of dementia?

The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. Research shows that timing matters. Starting hormone therapy closer to menopause may have a neutral or even potentially protective effect on brain health, while starting it later (especially after age 65) may be associated with a higher risk.

Further research is needed to clarify how hormone therapy influences dementia risk, particularly studies that evaluate differences by hormone formulation, route of administration, dose, and the age or timing of therapy initiation.

Bottom line: hormone therapy isn’t simply “good” or “bad” for the brain, it’s nuanced, and it should always be personalized.
