June is National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month. PTSD is a grave issue in U.S. prisons that disproportionately affects incarcerated people.

Not only does the criminal legal system cause mental health issues, but it exacerbates existing problems in a disproportionately impacted population.

The criminalization of homelessness does not make anyone safer. In fact, it does the opposite by expanding the carceral system, shuffling more people into prisons & jails, and exposing entire communities to the wide-scale harms of incarceration.

If the U.S. wants to end the housing crisis, it should invest in housing, not criminalization.
