Palm Beach VA Medical Center, S-BR Design Build Structural Strengthening solution

The Palm Beach Veteran Affairs Medical Center upgrade of radiology room required the strengthening of the support beams due to the weight of the new equipment. The traditional method to strengthen beams involves the form of a wider external jacket around the beams of steel and concrete. However, this method was not implemented, due to the amount of conducts under the floors, which limited the working space.

S-BR’s design build solution used CFRP, which allowed for the work to be performed in a highly congested space. Several layers of Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) were bonded with epoxy adhesive to the face and bottom of the support beams. While adding less than half of an inch to the beams size, they effectively upgraded the floors to support the new equipment without interfering with the hospital operations.
