Risk Before Rescue: Two Decision-Making Tools Every Leader Needs 07/02/2026

What if you could identify every major failure point in a project before it launched?

Not by being pessimistic. Not by second-guessing every decision. By using a structured, repeatable process that gives your team permission to be honest, surfaces the risks hiding in plain sight, and makes your final decision dramatically stronger.

That is exactly what this week's Toby Talks video covers. Two tools: the premortem and the decision checklist. One practical framework. Real-world stories. And a process you can walk into your next meeting and use immediately.

Watch it on YouTube and tell me which part hits closest to home.

Risk Before Rescue: How to Think About Failure Before It Happens 06/30/2026

Most leaders plan carefully for success. Almost no one plans for failure. And that gap is where projects go to die.

There are two tools that fix this: the premortem and the decision checklist. A premortem asks your team to imagine the project has already failed, then work backward to explain why. A decision checklist ensures you have not skipped the critical-thinking steps in the rush to commit.

Together, they close the single biggest gap in most decision-making processes.

My latest post on the Toby Talks blog breaks both down with a step-by-step process and a real-world story that shows exactly what changes when you use them.

Your Mission and Vision Are Worthless If You Cannot Explain Them: A Five-Step Framework for Getting Both Right 06/23/2026

Most leaders have a mission statement. Very few have one that actually means anything to the people supposed to live it.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: if you cannot explain your mission in plain language in 60 seconds, your team cannot use it to make decisions, your customers cannot use it to advocate for you, and your organization is making choices in the dark.

The good news? This is fixable. And it does not require a two-day off-site or an expensive consulting firm.

I just published a detailed breakdown of how to build a mission and vision that actually do their job. It includes a five-step framework, three tests every statement must pass, and an honest look at the words that kill good statements before they even get off the ground.
