Hickory stripe evolved out of ticking, the striped fabric used to cover mattresses and pillows for centuries. The name comes from hickory wood, prized for its strength, toughness, and resistance to splitting. Good marketing for workwear. By the late 19th century it made its way onto the railroads and was eventually adopted across many other heavy-labor trades. The stripe hid dirt, grease, and soot. The tight cotton twill was durable against rough working conditions.
I’ve always been drawn to utilitarian pieces. Things made for a specific purpose by people who weren’t thinking about legacy, just function. The object wasn’t precious. The work it aided was the point.
This simple shoulder bag is exactly that. Selvedge construction, structured bottom, interior tool pockets for a specialized trade. It wasn’t made to be preserved. Somehow this one was anyway.
