Cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding. That's why Rutgers researchers are working to improve not just outcomes, but the overall patient experience.
Using a digital simulation of a blood cancer clinic, a team from Rutgers Cancer Institute and Rutgers Business School - Newark and New Brunswick identified ways to reduce wait times and streamline care, helping patients spend less time waiting and more time focused on their health.
It's one example of how Rutgers research and innovation are helping improve lives every day.
How Rutgers Reduced Cancer Treatment Times New Rutgers research suggests much of the seemingly endless waiting for complex medical care can be engineered away by recreating operations inside a computer and testing countless possible improvements.

When it comes to cutting-edge simulation in health care, Rutgers Health is seeing SCARLET.
Short for Simulation Collaboratory Advancing Research, Learning, Education and Technology and developed in partnership between the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the Rutgers School of Nursing and the Rutgers School of Health Professions, SCARLET provides simulation-based innovations across Rutgers Health schools and clinical affiliates.
“SCARLET is envisioned as this catalyst to bring together all the different professions at creating highly immersive health care simulation,” says Les Barta, the director of simulation technology at the school of pharmacy and the acting executive director of SCARLET.
“The easiest way to describe it is living experiences that are as close to real life as possible, while being in a safe environment for learners to have a productive struggle. If a mistake or error is made, it doesn't reach a patient. This allows them to be as ready as they can be before they actually get to real patients.”
