Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc.
All the weeks of feedings, of mimicking their natural environment, and supporting their development leads to this.
When our baby bird patients begin to self-feed for the first time, it's more than just a beautiful milestone— it’s a critical indicator of their progress.
Self‑feeding shows us that their coordination and instincts are developing exactly as they should. It means they’re gaining independence, building confidence, and preparing for the next steps in their rehabilitation journey. Every tiny peck is a sign that they’re getting closer to returning to the wild where they belong.
Watching them reach this stage never gets old. It’s a reminder of why careful, species‑specific care matters and how even small victories deserve to be celebrated when it comes to wildlife rehabilitation.

As many of you know, Tri-State was founded 50 years ago in the aftermath of one of the largest east coast oil spills in history. Though the history of our organization is rooted in oiled wildlife response, the process staff and volunteers use to wash contaminated wild animals has changed dramatically over the years.
In the 90s, when the first picture was taken, birds were washed in the basement of the Frink Center. Because our building uses a well, no one could use the bathroom or sinks while a wash was underway. Imagine not being able to use water at work for days at a time when a large-scale spill takes place!
Flash forward to today and all washes are done in a separate building specially designed and equipped to handle the decontamination process for a wide variety of species. We also have a team of trained professionals on call 24/7 to respond to oil spills across the country and even internationally.
Even now, our work is far from over. We’re continually strengthening our processes, training, and equipment to make sure we’re always ready—and always using the most up‑to‑date methods to protect wildlife.
