This summer, Project for Empty Space has welcomed hundreds of community members to PES at Ironside for PES SUMMER STUDIO—a season of free, Artist In Residence led workshops. The gallery has been transformed into an active studio where participants of all ages have explored watercolor, acrylic painting, stencil-making, life drawing, digital fabrication, and more!

This year’s BAWA celebrates collective light by honoring Jean Cooney (Jean Cooney), Executive Director of Creative Time; Kristina Newman-Scott (Kristina Newman-Scott), Vice President of Arts at Knight Foundation and Komal Shah (Komal Shah), Founder of Making Their Mark Foundation. Together, they illustrate how leaders, advocates, and visionary women can illuminate the path for so many others. 💫

✨ Constellations takes inspiration from the radiant networks that make artistic futures possible: a constellation of leaders, artists, mentors, cultural workers, and badass women whose brilliance helps others find their way.

BAWA brings together more than 300 philanthropists, museum leaders, curators, collectors, art lovers, artists, cultural workers, and friends of the organization for an evening of celebration, exchange, and shared commitment to the artists and visionaries shaping more expansive futures. 🌟

➡️ Proceeds from the 2026 Badass Art Woman Awards help us support and sustain the 60+ critical exhibitions and public programs we organize each year—serving a community of over 250,000 direct audience members across four exhibition spaces, having exhibited more than 450 artists to date, running an arts residency building with more than 65 artists studios, and having awarded more than half a million dollars in grants and stipends to participating artists.

➡️ Developed over the course of Puerta’s two-year residency, “La Sierpe” marks the culmination of an extended period of research, experimentation, and artistic production. 🪡

⏳ Centered on the serpent as an ancient symbol of cyclical time, transformation, and collective renewal, the exhibition invites visitors into an immersive environment where inherited ways of seeing give way to new possibilities for connection. Throughout the exhibition, the serpent serves as both a guide and a guardian, illuminating the relationships among ancestral knowledge, ecological balance, and collective care.

🐍 The exhibition debuts a significant new body of work that expands Puerta’s ongoing exploration of ancestral knowledge, environmental stewardship, and cultural memory. Featured are recent works from her acclaimed Portales series, which draw upon Indigenous Colombian symbols while incorporating materials associated with Western consumer culture. 

🧵 Through intricate hand stitching, machine sewing, reclaimed food packaging, repurposed textiles, jewelry, and natural materials traditionally associated with adornment and spiritual protection, Puerta creates richly layered works that bridge ancestral traditions and contemporary ecological and social concerns.

“La Sierpe” will be on view September 9, 2026, through January 29, 2027, at 110 Edison Place, Newark, NJ. ✨

Participants of all ages are invited to create custom-painted tote bags inspired by the joy, warmth, and shared experiences of summer. Using artist-designed stencils and provided materials, this relaxed workshop celebrates creativity, connection, and community.

🌅 Sunset Selfies: Watercolor Portraiture with Shoshanna Weinberger (Shoshanna Weinberger)
🗓️ July 15
Through watercolor painting, participants will create self-portraits that explore how we see ourselves and how we choose to represent ourselves. Experiment with color, shape, and personal expression to create a unique portrait.
