Swipe to learn how to prevent powdery mildew from taking over your garden 🦠😱

Powdery mildew is a fungal parasite that grows into plant cells and steals nutrients from host plants 🦠 It attacks new leaf growth and starts out as a small white patch but can eventually make a whole plant look like it’s coated in flour 🌫 Powdery mildew can affect just about any plant, but in NYC we most often see it on cucumbers, zucchini, squash, roses, sage, and rosemary 🥒 It thrives in hot weather and typically pops up in NYC gardens later in July, but our gardeners have been noticing it earlier in the season than usual 🧐

Here are some tips from our   team on how to combat the plant disease:

🌹 Plant mildew-resistant varieties. They are bred with specific qualities to help combat mildew and are your best bet to withstand the fungus.

🌱 Keep your garden well-weeded and avoid overcrowding your plants. This will allow for good air circulation and prevent spreading.

🚮 Reduce garden debris, especially at the end of the season, to prevent overwintering.

🥀 Remove severely infected plants and trash the debris. Do NOT compost them.

WE BUILD AND RENOVATE COMMUNITY GARDENS 👀🪴🔄

Since 2010, our crew has completely renovated or built over 300 green spaces across NYC working with partner groups in low-income and/or underserved communities 🤝 We call this our   program 🗽

Our very first   build of this year was at Marie Brooks Community Garden, AKA Marie Brooks Community Garden, in the Morrisannia neighborhood of the Bronx 🌻 Marie Brooks Community Garden reached out to NYRP looking for help to rebuild old raised beds and make other improvement to their garden 👩‍🌾

Our team:

1️⃣ Built 6 raised garden beds and filled them with soil

2️⃣ Planted two Cherry Espalier Trees, three berry shrubs, and 35 perennials

3️⃣ Assembled one trellis

4️⃣ Constructed two benches and one picnic table

5️⃣ Pruned existing trees and shrubs

6️⃣ Spread threw yards of woodchips around the raised beds and seating areas

7️⃣ Removed a dump truck load of trash

We were thrilled to be able to help rejuvenate this community garden that has been serving the Morrisania neighborhood since 1983 🌿 We can’t wait to see it thrive this season!
