A visionary. A developer who chose to preserve instead of tearing down. A fierce supporter of the arts. The OG of reuse and recycle. A kind and humble man. From the moment Greg invited The Waterfront Museum to be a part of his bold plan to revitalize Red Hook 31 years ago, he has been there for the Museum and for our family.

Greg, we are so lucky and grateful to have shared all these years with you. We will miss you so very much. ❤️

In 2001, The Waterfront Museum hosted an exhibition of highwire walker and artist Philippe Petit’s nautical drawings. What we didn’t know was that on that 1974 day when Philippe Petit did his iconic (and unauthorized) wirewalk between the World Trade Center towers, Greg O’Connell was the NYPD arresting officer! Philippe never knew his name. Here they are meeting decades later. And wow did they have a good laugh!!!
