Devouring Gotham

What is the issue with deli guys slicing meat thin. Granted, I have to get my cold cuts at a Supermarket, due to the fact that there are no quality deli's in my area. All I want is thinly sliced ham, is that an unreasonable request?. I don't want to feel like I'm a biting into a slab of flesh (even though that's exactly what I'm doing).

Can any deli workers out there please explain the difficulty, and why I get the stink eye when I ask for it thin?
