St. Martin, 1999.

I stepped onto the deck of a retired 12-metre racing yacht and felt the whole history of the America’s Cup under my feet.

These boats had competed at the highest level in sailing, the most technically demanding race on water. In 1983, Australia ended 132 years of American dominance. What followed was a decade of extraordinary engineering, every country pushing further than the last.

By the time I found that fleet off St. Martin, they were quietly at anchor in the French Caribbean. Vicky Andren and Darren Carter were with me, and we shot aboard what felt like living maritime history.
