Most people never think about how they breathe.
But science shows that whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth can significantly affect your oxygen levels, sleep quality, energy, athletic performance, and even long-term airway health.
Your nose is not just there to smell. It is a highly specialized breathing organ.
Research published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that the nasal passages continuously produce nitric oxide — a molecule that plays a major role in oxygen delivery. When you breathe through your nose, nitric oxide travels into the lungs and helps widen blood vessels, improving circulation and increasing the amount of oxygen absorbed into the bloodstream with every breath.
Mouth breathing bypasses this entire system.
Studies have shown that nasal breathing can improve oxygen efficiency, reduce respiratory strain, and support better ventilation-perfusion matching — the process that allows your lungs to transfer oxygen into the blood more effectively.
The benefits extend beyond oxygen alone.
Researchers from the Karolinska Institute found that nasal breathing during sleep reduced snoring, improved sleep quality, and increased blood oxygen saturation compared to mouth breathing. Unlike the mouth, the nose also warms, humidifies, and filters incoming air, helping reduce irritation, inflammation, and exposure to airborne particles.
