The FIFA World Cup is the largest sporting event on the planet. It's a miracle of international cooperation and logistics, mostly fueled by the love of the game. But does it have to be this polluting? Here's how FIFA could make the cup clean.
We already know the planet is warming, but did you know it's changing the way rain falls and making rain far more dangerous?
The science is clear: warmer air holds more moisture. As a result, some parts of the country have already been hit with up to 60% more extreme precipitation since the 1960s.
🌧️ RAIN IS INTENSIFYING
Across the United States, the heaviest rainfall events are already getting stronger, especially in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast. Storms that used to be manageable are now pushing systems past their limits. Climate change now accounts for over 1/3 of inland flood damage in the U.S.
🌊 FLOODS FORM FASTER
It’s not just more rain, it’s rain arriving falling too quickly. Drainage systems overflow. Rivers rise rapidly. Soil becomes saturated before it can absorb what’s coming down.
🏚️ IN THE FLOOD ZONE
Flash floods hit neighborhoods, highways and farms. It turns roads into rivers. It damages homes, destroys crops and contaminates drinking water.
⚠️ AT RISK
The reality is that we are all at risk. Our infrastructure isn’t prepared to handle an influx of rain. When the storm drains cannot move storm water fast enough in a single event, flash floods form with little time to react.
A lack of snowpack, high temperatures and high winds have created a “perfect storm” for fire in the Rockies. Find out who's impacted, and why.
The fastest-warming continent on earth just got a taste of the future, and it's not pretty. See the very real impacts of this .
