Happy Pride in New York City!
“We propose that a demonstration be held annually on the last [weekend] in June in New York City to commemorate the 1969 spontaneous demonstrations on Christopher Street....” – 1969 resolution proposed by Craig Rodwell (Homophile Youth Movement) and Ellen Broidy (NYU’s Student Homophile League)
The NYC Pride March, then known as the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, was first held on June 28th, 1970— one year after the Stonewall Uprising.
To this day, the NYC Pride March remains the largest pride parade and largest pride event in the world.

When was the first National Pride March?
Following the 10-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising— and the assassination of Harvey Milk in 1978— thousands of activists gathered together in Washington D.C. for the first National March for Le***an and Gay Rights on October 14th, 1979.
Previously a collection of local marches, rallies, and demonstrations, this was the first time that such an event had garnered national attention and status.
“Rights are not won on paper; they are won only by those who make their voices heard.” – Harvey Milk
