Posted • Sharing something I wrote that’s been coming up a lot recently. Hope it’s a nice reminder for you:

You might have heard that sugary foods help blunt emotions when we're triggered…

Did you know that the same can be true when we meet so called positive, celebratory experiences?

In a dysregulated system, it's not just our triggers that cause contraction and overwhelm. Experiences of joy, safety and celebration can be overwhelming for many folks too.

In these moments, there's an added challenge: we're less likely to notice that our body is sending the tell tale signals that what's going on is 'too much, too fast, too soon.'

Do you find yourself reaching for ice cream, cake, coffee, alcohol, cookies or chocolate each time you've accomplished something? Each time you handed in a project, led a presentation, or finished something you had been working on for awhile?

When you bring some awareness to it, is it possible that the food being used as a way to 'take the edge off' or calm your system down?

This is a sign the body is struggling to hold/take in/integrate the celebratory experiences that come with achieving something.

When this happens try this before using food to calm it if you can:

Find the feeling that is buzzing around or feeling uncomfortable. Place a hand on it. Bring awareness to it and start a conversation either out loud or on the inside:

"I see you"
"I'm here"
"I've got you"
"Is there anything you'd like me to know?"
"You belong"

Intuit what feels right.

Don't explain to the feeling why it shouldn't feel this way. These experiences integrate more easily when we give them permission to be, rather than an explanation of why they should go.

Then watch what happens. Some folks get clear messages back, images, emotions. See what appears. This is what the body needs to process, so let them come up and through as best you can. This is the 'meat' of the practice.

If you keep this practice going, checking in each time you have a day where a big celebratory experience happens, you'll notice your system will begin to grow in it's capacity to be with expanded states.

Today we're sharing a brief reminder that this Friday is the last day to join the Focalizing Practitioner Certification Course at the super early bird rate. This is the best discount we offer on the program and is a reward for people who join well in advance.

If you're considering the program but want to speak to someone, now's a good time to set up a phone conversation with one of the trainers: https://www.theinstitute.org/schedule-a-conversation-with-a-trainer

This program runs for 10 weeks on Fridays starting with Friday February 17th 2023. If you're a wellness practitioner, therapist, coach or healer, this is a truly comprehensive way to integrate trauma informed somatic tools into your practice. It's also a fantastic course for those considering a career shift and have a desire to have a helping practice of their own.

The program welcome pack can be viewed here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z-em1j9CWb89gIUV3lsEs1_oGI68ngCg/view
