Inside Pure Earth's Audacious Plan to Scale Lead Poisoning Protection - Pure Earth 07/13/2026

What does it take to protect over 500 million children from lead poisoning? It's the question at the heart of our Audacious idea, revealed in President Drew McCartor's TED Talk which just landed.

Our new initiative, funded through The Audacious Project, will measure the scale of lead poisoning, trace it to its sources, and drive the national policies needed to stop it, protecting generations to come.

What does it take to protect children from lead?

In Ghana, school children grow up surrounded by an invisible threat. Lead hides in the soil where they play, the air near informal scrap yards, and the dust on their classroom desks, much of it from the unsafe, informal recycling of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs).

That's why one of the most important parts of our work happens inside classrooms. Pure Earth and our coalition partners teach children what lead is, how it enters their bodies, and the simple habits that reduce exposure, like washing hands before eating, keeping shoes outside, and avoiding play near scrap yards.

When a child understands the danger, everything changes. They carry that knowledge home to siblings, parents, and neighbors, and grow up knowing they have the right to a safe environment.

This is the last story in our Spring Match series on how governments, parents, and children prevent lead exposure around the globe. We only need $8,000 more to reach our $100,000 match goal, and every gift through June 30th is matched dollar-for-dollar.
