Minerva Mimi Coffie and I were truly honored to attend this year’s 55th Annual 55th Annual New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus representing the communities, individuals, and issues that matter most to the people we serve.

Being in spaces like this is a powerful reminder that advocacy does not stop at our neighborhoods — it extends into policy, leadership, and collective action. Throughout the conference, we witnessed meaningful conversations, bold commitments, and a shared urgency from our elected officials to address the challenges facing our communities. It reinforced that our work on the ground and their work in government must continue to move in alignment.

We leave this experience energized and focused on translating what we learned into real impact — bringing resources, partnerships, and renewed purpose back to our communities. Conferences like this are not just gatherings; they are bridges between voices and action, between lived experience and policy, and between vision and implementation.

We are grateful to stand in these spaces, carry the stories of those we serve, and return home even more committed to turning dialogue into change.

Comic Books for Justice (CB4J.org) has launched the Turning the Page on Illiteracy Campaign with a bold mission:
to place 10,000 comic books inside correctional facilities across New York State.

Over 70% of incarcerated individuals read at or below a 4th-grade level, but comics meet readers where they are — blending literacy, imagination, and dignity.

Through partnerships with the Office of Higher Education in Prison and Hudson Link for Higher Education, we’re expanding access to books, creativity, and hope — from correctional facilities to underserved communities through our Family & Friends Community Initiative.
