๐ 06 | Discovering Gansu's Water Challenge: From the Silk Road to the Future ๐ฐ
๐๏ธ Nestled in Northwestern China, Gansu has been a vital crossroads on the Silk Road for centuries, boasting treasures like the Dunhuang Mogao Caves. Its stunning landscapes - deserts, grasslands, plateaus, and mountains - paint a breathtaking picture. But beneath this beauty lies an ongoing struggle with water scarcity.
๐ง Gansu's annual precipitation averages just 277mm, with per capita water resources at 1,100 cubic meters. In comparison, China is among the world's 13 water-scarce nations, holding only a quarter of the global average. Gansu's water consumption per acre of farmland is only a quarter of the national average, making it vulnerable to drought, hindering its growth.
๐ Historically, Gansu's people ingeniously managed water scarcity, building dams, channels, ponds, and wells. But in the 21st century, urbanization and industry intensified the pressure. The Yellow River's resources are strained, excessive groundwater use worsened desertification, and climate change compounded the issue.
๐ก๏ธ Climate change has hit hard. Rising temperatures melted glaciers and alpine snow, disrupting water supply. Over four decades, the northwest's glaciers shrank by 1,400 sq km, snow lines receded 30 to 60 meters, and water flow from rivers declined. Even with increased rainfall, its uneven distribution poses challenges. Shrinking lakes, evaporation, and diminishing water resources follow.
๐ฎ Experts predict a warmer but not fundamentally wetter future. Temperatures might rise 1.9ยฐC to 2.3ยฐC in 50 years, reducing glaciers by 27%. Combining this with growing water needs, a shortage of 200 billion cubic meters annually could hit Gansu from 2010 to 2030.

๐๐๏ธ 04 | Exploring California's Watery Past: Floods and Adaptation ๐ง๏ธ๐ฃโโ๏ธ
While we often associate California with water scarcity, history tells us a different story. Did you know that severe floods have also shaped this region? ๐๐ง
One such event was the "Great Flood of 1861-1862," or GF1862. Imagine furious winds and relentless rain hitting central California for 43 days! Rivers swelled, forming an inland sea, and thousands lost their lives. Sacramento, the capital city, was submerged in three meters of water, causing a temporary government shift to San Francisco. It took six months for the waters to recede.
Fast forward to today, floods of that scale might happen every 100 to 200 years. With over 6 million people in California's Central Valley and a vital $20 billion annual crop industry, the stakes are higher than ever. Rising global temperatures increase the risk of these extreme events.
Climate scientists say the 1862 flood was linked to atmospheric rivers, long streams of vapour that carry immense water. These river-like paths can cause heavy rainfall when they meet mountains.
