Today we honor digital justice champions SOMOS () for Digital Inclusion Week – connected to its theme “Building Connected Communities.”

SOMOS, or Students Organizing a Multicultural and Open Society, is a Baltimore-based Latinx and Immigrant led multi-issue youth activist group fighting for social and economic justice in their communities.

In 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, they launched a campaign against Comcast’s digital redlining, demanding instead for free and/or affordable broadband internet connections for low-income households and students.

Their steadfast activism at the local and state levels led them to some wins against the digital divide, including a more affordable Internet Essentials Plan from Comcast at higher connection speeds.
