Genting Highlands, a popular hill resort in Malaysia, sits at about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. When viewed from far away in Kuala Lumpur on clear nights, its bright hotels, casinos, and theme parks shine so strongly that the whole mountain top looks like a glowing city floating above the clouds.
This illusion happens because Genting is much higher and cooler than the hot, humid lowlands below, so clouds and mist often form underneath it, hiding the dark mountain slope. Only the lights on the peak remain visible, creating a magical “sky city” effect.
Photos taken from KL rooftops regularly go viral, especially when the Petronas Towers are in the foreground. The best views appear during cool, dry evenings.
