It is the last week to see Asif Mian’s solo exhibition, “The Village Bites Itself.” Until Sunday, December 17.

“One piece, Family Tree, Poisoned Roots (all works cited, 2023), is a tribal Afghan rug made from wool, carefully cut apart and merged with a piece of bright-blue synthetic carpet. A stylized X appears at the center of the work: a symbol of death, toxicity, evil. But in genetics, which Mian studied at Drew University in New Jersey, the X is also one of the two chromosomes that help establish sex—the “poisoned root,” perhaps, of binaristic thinking and ideas regarding biological determinism.” — for

We are pleased to announce Asif Mian’s first solo show at the gallery.

Opening November 8, 6—8 PM

Asif Mian (b. Jersey City, NJ), earned a BS Biology (Genetics) & BA Studio Art from Drew University, an MFA from Columbia University (2018), and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2018). Mian’s multi-chapter project, RAF, was the focus of a 2021 solo exhibit at the Queens Museum for the Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Award. Mian has also exhibited at The Kitchen for the Whitney ISP curatorial exhibition, The Shed: Open Call, BRIC, and Queens Museum for ‘Queens International: Volumes’. Recently, Mian was awarded the 2022 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and participated in the Okayama Art Summit 2022 curated by Rirkrit Tiravanija.
