Why is the Paine Cottage a glow in green light?
Paine’s Rights of Man Vol. 1, first released in February and again in March 1791 reportedly sold more than 40,000 copies in Ireland in November that year.
The Society of United Irishmen used Paine's ideas to unite Catholics and Protestants against British rule, with his influence clearly visible in their early declarations. On 5 June 1792, Thomas Paine was proposed for honorary membership of the Dublin Society of United Irishmen.
Thomas Addis Emmet a prominent Irish lawyer, political leader, and a key member of the Society of United Irishmen fought for Irish independence from British rule. Emmet a close friend of Paine, attended his burial in New Rochelle and was one of the executors and trustees of Paine’s will.
New Rochelle has a strong connection to the Irish fight for independence with many of the Emmet family residing in New Rochelle. A wonderful read from Iona graduate, James McGlashin’s, 'New Rochelle her part in the Irish War of Independence'.

The Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association will have the grounds of Paine’s homestead glow green each night from March 17-21st in observance of Irish-American Heritage Month.

“The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.” pg. 1
“…however our eyes may be dazzled with snow, or our ears deceived by sound; however prejudice may warp our wills, or interest darken our understanding, the simple voice of nature and of reason will say, it is right.” pg. 9
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, words that came at a pivotal time in America’s fight for independence. January 10, 2026 marks its 250th anniversary of publication. It’s a quick, inspirational read. Take time this weekend to celebrate America250 by giving it a read.
