If you’re in property management, you already know disrespect is part of the job. Whether it’s from residents, vendors, or even owners, there will always be people who think they can talk to you any kind of way.

But here’s the thing: how you deal with them and how you respond are two different things.

✅ How You Deal With It: You acknowledge the situation, stay calm, and remind yourself that disrespect is a reflection of them, not you.

✅ How You Respond: Professionally, firmly, and with boundaries. You don’t have to match their energy, but you do have to make it clear that you won’t tolerate disrespect.

🔹 A resident cursing you out? “I’m happy to assist you, but I will not continue this conversation if I’m being spoken to disrespectfully.”

🔹 A vendor treating you like you don’t know what you’re talking about? “I expect professionalism in all business interactions. If that’s not possible, I’m happy to find another vendor.”

🔹 An owner questioning your expertise in a condescending way? “I understand your concerns, and as a professional in this industry for 20+years, I assure you we are handling this in the most effective way.”

The key? Stay professional, but stand firm. People will push your buttons just to see if they can. Let them know they can’t.

Respect isn’t given freely in this industry, you have to demand it through the way you carry yourself. You teach people how to treat you by what you allow.
