New Orleans belongs to all of us.
It’s the cultural heart of Louisiana and a city that helps drive our state’s economy. It’s also home to the people who make this place unlike anywhere else.
What’s happening now didn’t start with a loan request. For years, Jeff Landry has used the power of the state to challenge New Orleans’ ability to govern itself. Few examples illustrate that more clearly than what happened to Calvin Duncan.
Calvin helped win the fight to end Louisiana’s Jim Crow-era non-unanimous jury law, despite opposition from then-Attorney General Jeff Landry. When Duncan was later elected Orleans Parish Criminal Court Clerk with 68% of the vote, state lawmakers abolished the office he had just won.
Now Baton Rouge is using New Orleans’ finances as its next point of leverage. The city withdrew its request for a temporary loan after it became clear the state was prepared to reject it. New Orleans is now working through a recovery plan that includes $20 million in budget cuts, delayed projects, and temporary furloughs, while state leaders continue threatening other sources of city funding.
This has never been about one loan or one election. Not even one politician. It’s about whether the people of New Orleans get to choose their own future.
We stand with New Orleans. ⚜️
