Building resilience starts with investing in local leaders. SBP recently welcomed two new Disaster Resilience Fellows who will spend the next two years embedded in communities across Western North Carolina and North Mississippi, helping local partners assess risks, identify resilience priorities, pursue funding opportunities, and strengthen long-term preparedness efforts. Their arrival reflects the continued growth of SBP’s Fellows Program, which provides communities with the dedicated capacity and technical expertise needed to transform resilience goals into action.
Learn how these new Fellows will support community-driven solutions and help build a safer, stronger future for the regions they serve.

As communities across the Southeast prepare for another hurricane season, SBP is expanding the partnerships and resources needed to help them weather future storms. Thanks to a new $1 million investment from the American Red Cross, SBP is working alongside local nonprofits to strengthen preparedness, support resilience-focused training, expand FORTIFIED roofing initiatives, and build local capacity in communities impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Debby.

Preparing now for hurricane season — and not waiting for a storm to threaten — is essential for staying ahead of any storm. Stay safe all season.
Extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more intense. Understanding your specific risks is the first step to staying safe.
Make sure you're connected to a reliable alert service before a storm approaches. The FEMA app delivers real-time warnings from the National Weather Service, and the Red Cross Emergency: Alerts app lets you customize alerts and locate open shelters near you. Also, check whether your local emergency management department has its own notification system.

SBP was proud to be part of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD) Conference in Reno this May, one of the most important gatherings in the disaster response and recovery field.
Our California Resilience Fellow Valerie Brown presented at multiple panels covering the financial complexity of wildfire recovery, survivor-driven tech innovation, and the long road communities face when rebuilding after a wildfire. The conversations reflected just how much disaster survivors are navigating, often all at once.
We were also glad to have Disaster Assistance Programs Director Claire Balsley and Community Preparedness Manager Lyanne Ortiz at our table, connecting with partners and sharing SBP's work throughout the conference.
Thank you to National VOAD for bringing this community together. We're grateful to be in the room alongside the organizations doing this work every day.
