🖐️ Communication support should be individualized, accessible, and meaningful for every learner.
During a recent consultation visit to the Margaret Murphy Centers for Children in Maine, our Clinical Director, Catherine Horton, MS, CCC-SLP, BCBA, had the opportunity to see these incredible tactile symbols being used with a blind learner for PECS®, visual schedules, and visual reinforcement systems. 🙌
By adapting symbols into meaningful 3D objects, the team created a system the learner could independently understand, navigate, and use throughout the day.
This is what individualized communication support looks like — meeting learners where they are and building systems that work for their unique strengths and needs.

Bedtime routines can be challenging, especially when learners are unsure of what comes next.
Visual schedules help make routines more predictable by clearly showing the sequence of activities throughout the day. 🙌
When learners understand expectations and transitions, we often see:

✔ Reduced anxiety and frustration
✔ Smoother transitions
✔ More successful participation in daily routines
Following a visual schedule is one of the Nine Critical Communication Skills identified by the developers of PECS®, supporting learners across home, school, and community settings.
