God Uses Broken Things

Most of us spend a lot of our lives trying not to break. We hide our cracks. We apologize for our scars. We wonder if God can still use a life that hasn’t gone according to plan but-
“God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength.”

What if the very things we wish had never happened—the disappointments, the losses, the failures, and the tears—are the places where God is doing some of His deepest work?

Broken soil produces a harvest.

Broken clouds bring life-giving rain.

Broken bread feeds the hungry.

And broken people often become the ones God uses to encourage, comfort, and strengthen others.

The world may see brokenness as something to hide, but God sees an opportunity for redemption.

If you’re carrying wounds today, don’t believe the lie that your usefulness is over.

God has always specialized in taking what is broken and bringing beauty, purpose, and life from it.

In His hands, even the broken pieces still matter.

Even the broken pieces still have purpose.

To some people, a Blue Chip is just a piece of plastic.

To me, it's more like the memorial stones Israel carried out of the Jordan River in Joshua 4.

After God brought His people safely across, He commanded twelve stones to be taken from the river and set up as a memorial. The stones had no power in themselves. Their purpose was to remind future generations of what God had done.

That's what a Blue Chip represents to me.

There is no power in the plastic.

The power is in the God whose grace changes lives.

The day I took my Blue Chip wasn't the day I proved my strength.

It was the day I stopped trusting my own.

Every time I see it, I am reminded of the Lord's answer to Paul when he pleaded for his thorn in the flesh to be removed:

"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."
2 Corinthians 12:9

Paul wanted his thorn removed.

Instead, God gave him grace to endure it.

I've found that to be true in my own life as well.

When I look at the two crosses on the Blue Chip, I'm reminded of the two criminals who hung beside Jesus. Both were broken. Both were guilty. Both were helpless to save themselves. One turned to Christ and found mercy.

Recovery begins the same way.

Not when we become strong enough.

Not when we get our act together.

But when we turn to Jesus and surrender.

The Blue Chip doesn't remind me how faithful I've been.

It reminds me how faithful God has been.

And every chip that follows, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, one year, five years, or twenty years, is simply another memorial stone.

Not a trophy of achievement.

A testimony of God's continuing work.

Each chip is a reminder that God is still transforming us one day at a time, one moment at a time, shaping us more and more into the image of His Son.

When I look at my Blue Chip, I don't see plastic.

I see a reminder that God's grace was sufficient then, His grace is sufficient now, and His grace will be sufficient tomorrow.

And as the Serenity Prayer reminds us, we trust Him one day at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, so that we may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.

Amen.
