Often in view, sometimes acknowledged but rarely (or incorrectly) addressed! Spoiler alert ๐จ changing the neck doesnโt come from training the neck, it comes from core hypaxial engagement, to lift the back and cause positive relaxed cervical engagement. The neck of the horse is often pinpointed as an important factor in modern dressage, alongside limb action.
The conformation and muscle development of your horses neck can truly be a sign as to their mechanics of action during exercise. An overdeveloped underside of the neck (brachiocephalic muscle) is often a tell tale sign of incorrect riding and posture.
A simple exercise to do is to take a photo of your horses neck from the side, and trace over its outline. Can you see dips, bulges? Take your hand and stroke your horses neck gently with your eyes closed. Can you feel relaxation and suppleness? Is the muscle moving under your pressure, or remaining stagnant? Is your horse happy with this pressure, or do they move away from you?
Iโd love to see your responses and hear how you get on! ๐ค
