So much to say about this.

When I slow down with Jan van Eyck’s The Annunciation (c. 1435), I’m reminded that this isn’t just a quiet moment from the Christmas story. It’s a statement about how history actually works.   Beneath Mary’s feet are older stories carved into the floor. David and Goliath. Samson’s strength and his collapse. Centuries of courage, failure, and waiting. Van Eyck doesn’t tidy them up or start again. He places this moment right on top of them.   This is the instant Jesus is conceived in Mary’s womb. Nothing is erased. The broken story is fulfilled. God’s presence moves from stone temples into a human life, built on real history rather than ideal conditions.   The painting leaves me with an invitation. What part of my own story am I still treating as unusable, when it might be the very place God wants to dwell? 12/22/2025
